Sensory Garden Grant

BBCF Supports LISD Education Foundation Grant for Sensory Garden

In 2014, the Lufkin ISD Education Foundation began providing local teachers the support, funds and encouragement needed to implement innovative ideas and experiences in the classroom. Each year, Lufkin ISD teachers have the opportunity to request specific funding for specialized programs they want to introduce to their students. The number of submitted applications for grants has steadily grown over the years. So far, the Education Foundation has awarded 164 grants and nearly a half-million dollars in grant funds.

The Brookshire Brothers Charitable Foundation annually supports grants awarded by the Lufkin ISD Education Foundation. This year, the grant went to Meagan Brevard at Herty Primary. Meagan and her fellow teachers will use the funds to create an adaptive outdoor sensory garden area for special needs students, allowing kindergarteners through second graders the opportunity to learn and explore outside of the traditional classroom.

Students will plant flowers and vegetables in the sensory garden to better understand the plant cycle utilizing specialized beds that are specifically designed for wheelchair use. There will also be multiple sand and water activity tables, a sandbox and water play for sensory interaction that helps teach self-regulation, as well as fine and gross motor skills. Occupational, physical and speech therapists will be able to use the sensory garden to work with special needs students in a fun, unique way.

Congratulations to Meagan and the Herty Primary team!
